Description

Description of talk: This symposium will provide a global overview of key aspects of BV epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment among women, with a focus on US populations. Future research directions in several of these key topic areas will be discussed at the end.

Learning Objectives

1. Review BV prevalence and incidence by region and among specific populations

2. Summarize epidemiological and microbiological factors supporting sexual transmission of BV

3. Provide an overview of emerging incident BV pathogenesis research (recognizing there are little data on recurrent BV pathogenesis)

4. Review currently available molecular diagnostic tests for BV diagnosis, particularly those that can be used at the point-of-care

5. Emphasize the need for co-testing for concomitant STIs among women with BV

6. Provide a viewpoint on implementation of male partner treatment in US clinical settings

7. Propose future directions for research (partner treatment trials in the US, partner treatment trials with casual sex partners, female partner treatment trials, BVAB diagnostic tests in men)
